A TikToker deemed the five-time Emmy awardee actor Drew Barrymore as ‘racist’ after she posted a video of her saying ‘frolicking in the rain’. While a few agreed with the TikToker, most of the internet is baffled and confused regarding the connection between racism and that actor ‘frolicking in the rain’.

Libs of TikTok, a Twitter account, shared a video where a TikToker criticised the actor and called her racist. In the video, Brewmore is seen walking outside and laughing in the rain saying “whenever you can, go out into the rain. Do not miss the opportunity.”

The TikToker said, “You and I both know that you are capable of enjoying the rain and frolicking freely without filming it and then posting it to TikTok. Now you’ve just cosigned at least three million 8.5 by 11 front and back people who just go out of their way to disrespect and dismiss the boundaries that black creators have set and now you are one of those people. So, I guess my question is why is it so important to all of you to treat us like we don’t matter.”

To contextualise we need to trace back a couple of months. In May 2022, a Mashable article listed viral TikToks of the week, featuring the “most joyful” part- the thread of Black men frolicking through lush, green field. It was a trend started by @thexsadxoptimistic's video where he runs through a meadow of yellow flowers in a pink tee shirt exclaiming “Oh my god! I am frolicking!" The video ended up with 2.9 million views and over 7,30,000 likes. While the tag "frolicking" has over 8.8 million views and "black men frolic" has 103,000 views and counting.

However, the internet is still unclear about the connection between Barrymore’s video with racism.

“I'm so utterly confused. Somebody, please explain the connection between frolicking in the rain and black people. Are there historical atrocities committed against black people by a white person(s) frolicking in the rain? My questions are genuine,” wrote Shukri Abdirahman, an American and Muslim former Congress candidate.

Another user wrote, “Drew Barrymore enjoying the rain in California is now racist. Apparently. I truly despair that I have to share a planet with such undeniable halfwits.”

“Can someone explain why is racist for Drew Barrymore to enjoy the rain?” asked another user.
