Mumbai - New Delhi Rajdhani Express is all set to complete its 50 years on May 17, 2022. The train firsts started its journey from Mumbai Central (earlier known as Bombay Central Railway Station) on 17 May 1972.
This train connecting the financial capital to the political capital is the second train of its kind in India after the fully air-conditioned Rajdhani from New Delhi to Howrah (Kolkata). This train started three years before Mumbai - Delhi Rajdhani Express began its operations.

Interesting facts
- The train has been updated a lot in these 50 years. As reported by Times Of India, the train was initially introduced with WDM-2 diesel locomotives followed by the use of WAP locos in stretches of the route that were electrified. However, this problem was resolved in 1993 with the introduction of AC-DC locomotives. At the turn of the millennium, the electrification of the entire route was completed.
- At the start, the train took about 19 hours and 50 minutes to reach its destination. However, with several modifications over the past 50 years, the travel time has been reduced by 3 hours.
- By the end of 2003, the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express adopted new Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) rakes designed for a higher speed of 140 kmph with anti-telescopic and anti-climbing discs and anti-skid disc brakes.
- Up until 1988, this train was the fastest in India with a top speed of 120 kmph.
- The initial fare of this train was ₹ 349. In 1974, its price increased for the first time from ₹ 349 to ₹ 465. Currently, the ticket fare starts from ₹ 2225 and goes up to ₹3055.

- This train leaves Mumbai at 4:40 pm on the first day and it reaches New Delhi at 08:35 am on the second day.
- Every passenger is served tea, coffee, snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner during the journey. The passengers are given the option of veg and non-veg and are served the meal according to their preference. The passengers are provided with a full meal consisting of several items including 2 dishes, curd, rice, paratha and many more.
- The train has about 25 coaches which are spread across 3A, 2A, and 1A.
- One of the most interesting parts of this train is that it keeps up with the changing times and provides its customers with free WiFi that they can use for over 500 hours.
