Being ‘social media compatible’ in a relationship means that you and your partner have a clear understanding of each other’s expectations, boundaries, and habits regarding social media use. It revolves around mutual trust and respect. Both partners should be on the same page about how much time they spend on social media, what they feel comfortable sharing, and what they prefer to keep private.
For instance, one partner might enjoy posting relationship updates, while the other prefers to keep things more private. Compatibility is achieved when these differences don’t lead to conflicts.
Dr Otta said, “It’s essential for both partners to recognise and respect each other’s social media habits and avoid behaviours that could negatively impact the relationship, such as spending excessive time interacting with others online in ways that could be inappropriate. Social media compatibility is about smoothly integrating it into the relationship without causing misunderstandings or damaging trust.”

According to Dr Otta, conflicts can arise in relationships when partners' expectations and boundaries regarding social media use aren't aligned. He told us, “Jealousy can also surface if one partner is seen interacting with others on social media in ways that may be perceived as inappropriate, such as liking or commenting on posts. Not responding to messages while being active online can further lead to misunderstandings.” Dr Otta advises that both partners discuss their differing priorities, communication styles, and emotional needs to prevent conflicts from arising later on.

On the other hand, if you choose not to share anything on social media, your partner might feel like the relationship is being kept a secret or that you're not fully committed. However, as per Dr Otta, this also allows the couple to build a deeper connection without seeking external validation.

A social media detox involves temporarily stepping away from platforms to focus on chatting, bonding, and enjoying each other's company. Constantly scrolling through social media can disrupt relationship dynamics, and taking a break can help reset things. Dr Otta said, “A social media detox can be an excellent way to reconnect with your partner by giving you both the chance to spend time together without digital distraction.”
For couples facing issues like jealousy or neglect, a social media detox can provide the necessary space to reflect and recharge. It offers a chance to unwind, be mindful, and recognise how digital habits may be affecting the relationship. However, for the detox to work, both partners must be willing to participate. Setting clear goals and engaging in offline activities can enhance the effectiveness of the detox.

Dr Otta suggests that the first step is to have an open conversation about each other's preferences and boundaries when it comes to social media. Talk honestly about your views on privacy, public posting, and interactions with others online. It's important to accept that your partner may have different choices and levels of engagement, so try to understand their perspective without judgement.
Next, it's helpful to establish clear guidelines on what to share online and how much time should be spent on social media during quality moments together. Setting tech-free times, where both of you can enjoy each other’s company without distractions, can also be beneficial.
Lastly, avoid making assumptions. If you have concerns about your partner’s behaviour online, address them directly rather than jumping to conclusions. Try to find a middle ground where both of you feel comfortable, like striking a balance between public posts and private moments.
