In the world of social media, texting is one of the most preferred ways to communicate and stay connected. While it’s one of the easiest ways to communicate, there are higher chances of miscommunication and misinterpretation. Amidst several social media terms, we came across a new term called ‘Dry Texting’. We spoke to Tammy Nelson, PhD, a Board Certified Sexologist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Imago Relationship therapist, and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor, Los Angeles to gain a deep understanding of this term from a relationship perspective.

What Is Dry Texting?

Tammy Nelson said, “Dry texting is when someone texts you one word, or an emoji, or doesn’t respond to your texts in the way you want, leaving you wanting more.”

Dry texting can be exhausting as it feels that the other person isn’t putting the effort into the conversation which ultimately leads to miscommunication and rifts.

However, she highlighted that this is not necessarily a comment or reflection on how someone feels about you or your current relationship. Some people just don’t like to text. They are busy, they don’t have time for long, wordy texts, and feel more comfortable with phone calls or in person connection.

Straight Forward Communication

Tammy recommends that if you do want more connection, or better response from the person you are texting, ask them directly. You can ask them if they prefer another way of communicating, such as a phone call, video call, or an in-person conversation. This will help you understand their communication preferences.
