Fry it, bake it or grill it, fish recipes are the evergreen healthy food that you can prepare in numerous ways. Whether it is the Bengali shorshe ilish (fish cooked in mustard sauce), fish paturi, chettinad fish fry of the south or Odia style macha tarkari, a fish dish is a sight for a foodie’s sore eyes. Shilpa Shetty set out to prepare a parsi fish dish called Patrani Macchi and as we all know, she always makes a yummy healthy version of every recipe so it was no different this time too. Patra means leaf and the dish is basically fish wrapped in a banana leaf to be steamed. The soft banana leaf allows all the flavours to mingle together as the steaming take place and you can also make a vegetarian version of this by using paneer instead of fish. This is a simple dish made with no oil at all so it makes for a really healthy lunch!
Ingredients ForPatrani Macchi Recipe
- Pomfret fish fillet: 2 pieces, sliced into two (want to know tips to buy fish? Read here)
- Freshly grated coconut: 1 cup
- Coriander leaves: ¾ cup
- Ginger: 2 inch piece, chopped
- Mint leaves: ¼ cup
- Green chillies: 2
- Jeera powder: 1 tsp
- Coconut sugar: ½ tsp
- Lemon juice: 1 ½ tsp
- Salt: As per taste
- Banana leaves: 4
Method Of Preparing Patrani Macchi
- Boil water in steamer
- Mix all the ingredients (except the fish fillet and leaves) in a blender. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of water for consistency and to bind the paste. Add more water and salt if required.
- Take banana leaves, add a layer of chutney and place a fillet on it. Coat the fish with one more layer of chutney making sure to cover all sides.
- Wrap the fish in the banana leaves and pack it with the help of toothpicks. You can also use thread to tie these up.
- Put in inside the steamer. Leave it for 7 minutes on medium flame and that’s it!

- Make sure you don’t overcook this, so that all flavours are retained.
