Idlis are among such food items that you can store in your refrigerator to create a lip-smacking snack for the day after. We have four recipes listed below for you to turn leftover idlis into your new favourite dishes.
Idli Fry
Ingredient
- 2 Tablespoon Oil
- 1.5 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
- 6-8 Leftover Idlis Diced Into Four Pieces
- 1 Medium Sliced Onion
- Salt To Taste
- 1/2 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- 1-2 Chopped Green Chillies
- 8-10 Fresh Curry Leaves
Method
- In a kadhai, add the oil.
- Add mustard seeds, curry leaves and chopped green chillies.
- Once the mustard seeds start to crack, add onions.
- As the onion slices turn translucent, pour in diced leftover idlis.
- Mix everything well, add salt to taste and red chilli powder.
- Saute idlis for 3-5 minutes and serve them hot with chutney.
Masala Idli
Ingredients
- 6-8 Leftover Idlis Diced Into Four Pieces
- 2 Tablespoon Oil
- Salt To Taste
- 1 Medium Chopped Onion
- 1 Medium Chopped Tomato
- 1 Tablespoon Ginger-Garlic Paste
- 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- 1-2 Chopped Green Chillies
- 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Pav Bhaji Masala
- 1/4 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- 2 Tablespoon Chopped Coriander Leaves
Method
- In a heated pan, add oil and cumin seeds.
- Add green chillies and turmeric powder. Saute it.
- Add chopped onion and ginger-garlic paste. Stir everything together until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add tomatoes and cover the lid of the pan.
- Once the tomatoes are a little mushy, add salt to taste, pave bhaji masala and red chilli powder.
- Mix everything well until the spices and vegetables all get cooked.
- Add 1.5 cups of water and let the mixture simmer on low heat.
- Once the mixture thickens, add diced idlis.
- Cook the idlis for 5 minutes and add fresh coriander leaves on top for garnishing and fresh flavour.
- Serve it hot.
Idli Upma
Ingredients
- 6-8 Mashed Idlis
- 1 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
- 1 Tablespoon Oil
- 1/2 Teaspoon Urad Dal
- 1/4 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- 1 Medium Chopped Onion
- 1 Chopped Green Chilli
- Salt To Taste
Method
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and urad dal.
- Once the seeds splutter and the dal turns brown, add chopped green chilli and onions.
- After the onion becomes translucent, add mashed idlis, salt to taste and red chilli powder.
- Cook everything together for 5 minutes and serve the upma hot.

Idli Tikki
Ingredients
- 6-8 Mashed Leftover Idlis
- 1 Grated Carrot
- 50gm Chopped French Beans
- 1 Cup Mashed Green Peas
- 2 Tablespoons Chopped Coriander Leaves
- Salt To Taste
- 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Garam Masala Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Roasted Cumin Seeds Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- Oil

Method
- In a pan, a tablespoon of oil.
- Add turmeric powder, grated carrot, mashed peas, red chilli powder, cumin seeds powder and chopped French beans.
- Add salt to taste and allow everything to come together.
- Once the vegetables are cooked, add mashed idlis.
- Leave everything to cool off.
- Make small patties of the mixture and either shallow or deep fry them in oil.
- Serve tikkis hot with tea and chutney.
