Korean Lettuce Salad, known as Sangchu Geotjeori, provides a refreshing and crisp addition to any meal, with a balance of savoury, sweet, tangy, and spicy flavours that are characteristic of Korean cuisine. It is quick and easy to prepare, making it perfect for busy days or when you want a simple yet flavorful side dish.
How To Make Korean Lettuce Salad
1. First prepare the lettuce by washing the lettuce thoroughly under water to remove any dirt or debris. Use a salad spinner or gently shake the lettuce to remove excess water. Tear the lettuce into bite-sized pieces with your hands. Place the torn lettuce in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
2. In the same large mixing bowl, combine the chopped green onion, minced garlic, hot pepper flakes, chopped onion, soy sauce, salt, sugar, vinegar and toasted sesame oil. Stir the mixture thoroughly until the sugar is completely dissolved and all ingredients are well combined. The dressing should have a balanced flavour of salty, sweet, tangy, and spicy notes.
3. Add the torn lettuce pieces to the bowl with the seasoning mixture. Using clean hands, gently toss the lettuce with the seasoning mixture. Be careful not to crush the lettuce; the goal is to coat each piece evenly with the dressing.
4. Once the lettuce is evenly coated with the seasoning mixture, sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the top for added flavour and texture.
5. Korean lettuce salad is best served fresh and immediately after preparation. It's typically enjoyed as a side dish alongside steamed rice.
