Are you craving a warm, crispy, and wholesome snack that's both delicious and healthy? Then you must try Thalipeeth. This traditional Maharashtrian dish is a versatile and flavourful flatbread that's packed with nutrients and can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Thalipeeth is a wholesome option that pairs perfectly with a side of yoghurt and chutney.
Thalipeeth is a popular Maharashtrian dish made from a variety of flours, spices, and herbs. It’s not just delicious but also extremely nutritious, as it’s made from a blend of flour and spices. This simple Thalipeeth recipe is by Chef Ranveer Brar.
Step 1: Start by combining bhajani flour, green chilli ginger, and garlic and mix well. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, sesame seeds, carom seeds, coriander leaves, chopped onion, and salt. Mix well to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed. Slowly add water, a little at a time, and knead the dough. You want the dough to be firm but soft.
Step 2: Once the dough is ready, divide it into small portions, roughly the size of a small ball. You must flatten the dough ball by pressing it onto a clean muslin cloth with your palms until it's a nice round shape. You can even use your fingers to press down and make small indentations on the surface using little oil and water, this not only helps with cooking but also gives it a traditional touch.
Step 3: Heat a tava (griddle) or non-stick pan on medium heat. Once hot, gently drop the Thalipeeth and slowly remove the muslin cloth from it. Cook it on one side for about 2-3 minutes.
Step 4: Flip the Thalipeeth gently and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes. You can drizzle a little oil around the edges to make it crispier and more flavourful. Press the Thalipeeth with a spatula to ensure even cooking on both sides.
Step 5: Continue flipping and cooking until it’s evenly browned and crisp. Now Thalipeeth is ready to be served with some yoghurt or chutney.
