Pomegranates are one of the healthiest fruits. They can help in keeping our body safe from cancer, support a healthier heart, help prevent arthritis and joint pain, lower blood pressure, support digestion, and also supply the body with antioxidants and multiple vitamins. As much as we want to enjoy this juicy fruit, most of the time we end up picking bright red ones that may or may not have many seeds inside. Deseeding and storing a pomegranate is another tough task but if you know the right technique then you can reap the benefits of having this fruit. Her Zindagi talked to Chef Raji Gupta who gave us tips to enjoy this nutritious fruit.
Selecting The Right Pomegranate
You can’t learn anything special about pomegranate looking at its colour. It will vary from pink to dark red. You need to pick heavy pieces because those are the ones with more juice in them. Light weight pomegranates do not contain as much juice as heavier ones. Also, check the skin of the pomegranate; it should be firm. To be sure the pomegranates aren’t bruised, hold each pomegranate and gently squeeze it.

To get those tiny seeds out of the giant fruit is so difficult so make sure you pick the right one. Then cut it in half, now push out the center a bit, hold it in one hand with the seeds facing down in a bowl, now take a wooden spatula and tap the skin on the back so that it loosens the seeds. Keep at it, once the first few kernels drop out, you’ll be able to get all of them out. Now you can enjoy it in a salad, make juice, prepare anaar lassi or just have it as a fruit.
