Many films have thrown their hats in for the Academy Awards, according to the reports, Akshay Kumar's film 'Mission Raniganj' is a confirmed independent entry for the Oscar 2024.

Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra's film 'Mission Raniganj' has been independently sent to the Oscars. Based on a true incident, the film has garnered a lot of praise from the critics, however, it didn’t do so well at the box office. On National Cinema Day, the film’s independent entry to the Oscars has been announced.

How Are The Independent Entries Different From Official Entries?

The official entries are essentially chosen and sent to the Oscars by the government, with a major role of the Film Federation of India while the independent entries are submitted by the filmmakers without any involvement from the government.

This year, India’s official entry for the Academy Awards is the Malayalam film '2018: Everyone Is A Hero' which presents the horrific events surrounding the severe Kerala floods of 2018 that devastated the state.

An official entry is appointed by a committee selected by the Film Federation of India, and it is then sent to the 'Best Foreign Language Film' category with English subtitles. While the independent entries are submitted directly by filmmakers.

Films like 'RRR,' 'Youngistaan,' and 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' have been submitted as independent entries from India in the past years. 'Mission Raniganj' now joins this list of films making a bold independent bid for Oscar glory.
