The 2025 Golden Globes saw director Payal Kapadia's ‘All We Imagine As Light’ face fierce competition but ultimately miss out on the top awards. Despite her close run, the film made its mark, earning significant recognition in the international film circuit. Although Kapadia didn’t take home the Best Director award or the Best Non-English Language Film Golden Globe, her work still garners attention, with new accolades and nominations.

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light Fails To Win

Payal Kapadia’s critically acclaimed film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was nominated for several prestigious awards at the 2025 Golden Globes. The director came close to winning Best Director but lost to Brady Corbet, who took home the award for ‘The Brutalist’. Kapadia’s film competed against some heavyweights in the industry, including Jacques Audiard (‘Emilia Perez’), Sean Baker (‘Anora’), Edward Berger (‘Conclave’), and Coralie Fargeat (‘The Substance’).

Kapadia's film was nominated for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture but lost to the French film ‘Emilia Perez’ category. Other contenders in this category included ‘I'm Still Here’ and ‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’. Despite the setbacks at the Golden Globes, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ has continued its remarkable journey through the awards circuit.

Payal Kapadia’s nomination at the Golden Globes was historic in its own right. She became only the second Indian director to be nominated at the Golden Globes, following Shekhar Kapur, for the English film ‘Elizabeth’. Notably, Kapadia is the first Indian filmmaker to be nominated for an award for a Malayalam film, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage.
