OpenAI, the company behind the groundbreaking ChatGPT, has made its first significant move into the Indian market by hiring Pragya Misra as the head of government relations, according to a report by FirstPost.
Who is Pragya Misra?
At 39 years old, Pragya Misra brings a wealth of experience to her new role at OpenAI. Prior to this, she served as the Director of Public Affairs for Truecaller, a contact verification company, since July 2021. Her responsibilities involved working closely with government ministries, investors, key stakeholders, and media partners, as reported by FirstPost.
Misra's journey in the tech industry began when she joined Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) in 2018, where she led WhatsApp's campaign against misinformation. Notably, she was WhatsApp's first employee in India, as reported by FirstPost.
Educational Background and Early Career
As per Misra’s Linkedln profile, she earned her MBA from the International Management Institute in 2012 and holds a commerce degree from the University of Delhi. Her academic journey also includes studying at the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science, where she pursued a Diploma in Bargaining and Negotiations

Multifaceted Interests
Beyond her professional achievements, Misra is a podcaster who hosts the ‘Pragyaan Podcast,’ where she invites guests and explores topics ranging from meditation to consciousness. Her Instagram bio reveals that she is a Heartfulness Meditation Trainer and a former golfer who has represented India at several international tournaments between 1998 and 2007.
OpenAI's Indian Ambitions
OpenAI's decision to hire Misra as the head of government relations in India is a strategic move, as the company eyes the lucrative Indian tech market. According to Bloomberg, India, with its vast population, offers a significant growth opportunity for international technology companies. However, navigating the country's regulatory landscape has proven challenging, as lawmakers and regulators aim to protect local firms.
As reported by FirstPost, OpenAI's chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, expressed the company's commitment to investing in India's developer community and plans to organise developer summits in the country this year. "India has the key ingredients of being one of the world's leaders in AI. It has the largest developer community in the world, with some of the most impressive talent in the field, a track record of developing extraordinary technology businesses and a relentless focus on competing on the world stage," he said at the ET Now Global Business Summit in February.
