Pearls trace their history back in time. They have been adorned for centuries and symbolise purity, sophistication and timeless elegance. However, these days, markets are full of counterfeit pearl jewellery which throws a challenge to pick the authentic one. In light of the same, we spoke to Dr Preeti Jain, founder of Jewels By Preeti. Scroll down to learn how to identify real pearls amidst the counterfeit options.
Ways To Identify Real Pearls
Here are the ways to identify real pearls:
Perform Tooth Test
The first thing to look for in a real pearl is its minor imperfections. Real pearls have some minor blemishes, which is a great indication of pearl quality. For this, you can gently rub it against a tooth, as a real pearl should feel slightly gritty, and imitations like those made of glass or plastic will feel seamlessly smooth.
Look For Tiny Imperfections And Drill Hole
Fake and mass-produced pearls feature glossy surfaces and will not have any visible bumps, pits, or other blemishes. Whereas, the finest and real pearls will have imperfections, and that’s what makes each pearl unique. For instance, you can check for drill holes in real pearls; they are usually very small.
Inspect For Slight Irregularities On Surface
Remember that minor flaws are common in natural pearls, and they add character to these lustrous gems. If all of the pearls in your jewellery (kundan jewellery for brides) strand are trying to fit in and look identical, they’re probably fake.
Feel The Pearl Temperature
You can feel the temperature of the pearl. Real pearls are cool to touch for the first few seconds. On the other hand, fake pearls will feel warm at room temperature.
