There are some winter pieces that do more than keep you warm. A pashmina is one of them. Soft, feather-light and quietly luxurious, it often carries stories of craftsmanship that many of us rarely pause to think about. The shawl is almost symbolic of grace and sophistication. Behind every shawl are skilled artisans who work patiently with one of the most delicate natural fibres in the world. However, not everyone who owns a pashmina knows how to care for one properly. As winter draws to a close, we delve deeper into how to care for a pashmina.

“Pashmina is not just another winter garment. It is the result of weeks of careful spinning and weaving, often performed entirely by hand,” says Nishant Malhotra, Founder of WeaverStory. Weaverstory actively promotes authentic handloom and Pashmina. Around 10 Kashmiri artisans are engaged in weaving genuine Pashmina, supporting traditional craftsmanship and preserving the heritage of the craft.

Pashminas Are Fragile

What makes pashmina special is also what makes it fragile. “Many people do not realize that the fiber is extremely delicate. It reacts quickly to heat, harsh detergents, and excessive friction. A single incorrect wash can weaken the softness and structure that took a long time to create,” he explains.

For women who invest in timeless wardrobe pieces, knowing how to care for them properly can make all the difference. The good news? Pashminas don’t demand complicated maintenance.Insider-2 (13)

“We often say that caring for pashmina is less about cleaning and more about respect,” Malhotra shares.
In everyday use, your shawl does not need frequent washing. Instead, air it out after wearing, preferably in a shaded, well-ventilated space. This helps remove odours and keeps the fabric fresh without stressing the fibres.

How to Wash a Pashmina?

When washing becomes necessary, simplicity is key. Use cold water and a very mild soap. Avoid rubbing, wringing or twisting the fabric. Handle it gently, as you would a treasured heirloom. After washing, press out excess water softly and lay it flat on a clean towel to dry. “Drying it flat, away from direct sunlight, helps to preserve its texture and natural sheen,” he advises.Inisder-1 (1)

Storage matters too. Fold your pashmina neatly and place it in a breathable cotton bag. Keep it away from damp spaces and avoid plastic covers that trap moisture. With proper care, it can remain beautiful for decades.

“If stored properly in breathable fabric and kept away from moisture, a good pashmina can last for decades. For us, preserving a shawl is also about preserving the craft, the skill, and the quiet labour behind it,” Malhotra says.

In a fast-fashion world, caring for a pashmina becomes a small act of knowing one’s culture, and honouring local artisans. It honours both the garment and the hands that created it.
