Wedding season is almost upon us, and the only question we ask ourselves is: what do we wear? But figuring out what NOT to wear to a wedding is more difficult. One wrong move and you become “that woman in the wedding”. As a wedding guest you want to look your best, of course, but there are certain rules that every guest should follow when it comes to the dress code.
If you want to avoid an awkward wedding guest attire situation, then read these seven rules that always apply!
White Colour
Yes, we know it is summer, but white is a complete no-no if you are a guest at a Hindu or a Christian wedding. In the Hindu religion, it is considered a colour of mourning, and when it comes to Christianity, the bride wears white and you don’t want to steal her thunder. Instead, opt any brighter coloured outfit.
Nothing Too Sexy
We all want to flaunt our bodies, but a wedding is not the place to wear your shortest or lowest cut look. Plus, many weddings take place in holy places, where covering up is more appropriate. So, keep those shorts or sexy outfits for any other night.
Denim = NO!
Jeans are too casual as well. Plus, why wear denim when you can wear it literally any other day? If you want to wear wedding casual, pick a simple monotone dress.
Black Colour
Hear us out: black is a very sophisticated colour choice. But according to Indian culture, it is considered bad luck to wear black on a happy occasion. So, don’t bring any bad luck with you to your friend’s happiest day.
Flip Flops Or Crocs
Imagine yourself in an Indian traditional outfit, paired with jhumkas and flip flops! Yes, flip flops! Sounds weird? It is not appropriate to wear flip flops or crocs at a wedding. Think of more formal footwear, like heels or pumps for the ceremony. Easy loafers would make for a better choice of footwear for the beach wedding.
Carrying Handbag Is A No-No!
As women, we are used to having everything we need at our fingertips and in our bags. Pain medications, chapsticks, tampons, and our wallet are just a few of the many things we’re constantly toting around. While this may be okay for the day to day, ensuring we have everything we need for a long day at the office. But opt for smaller clutches instead of large handbags or purse.
Ripped Anything
We know, ripped denim is in trend, but still, it is inappropriate to wear in a wedding. So, do not wear anything ripped to a wedding and do not confuse a ripped outfit for a good cutout one, which might be appropriate to wear to a wedding.

Red Colour
This should be a no brainer. If you are attending a Hindu wedding, never wear a red colour dress. This is the one thing the bride cares about- she’s most likely wearing red lehenga, and it's her day, so don’t steal her thunder.
