After spending the first two years of the 2020s in our pyjamas, 2022 brought normalcy in our lives and we sought comfort in fashion. With nostalgia taking a front seat, we saw a resurgence of ‘90s and Y2K trends. Celebrities and models alike dressed in bold colours and prints. Pink and purple became the shades of the year. However, with the possible recession coming up in 2023, we talked to Anand Singh, Fashion Design Manager, DaMENSCH about the expected fashion trends this year.
Sustainability fueled by a crisis
“One thing we need to understand with 2023 fashion is that buying will be very focused and versatile. “Polycrisis era” consumers are becoming more and more aware about sustainable fashion,” said Singh. He added that there will be a lot of critique on the lifecycle of the product, from transparency to which material has been used and sourced from where to ethical practices in dyeing and washing with no child labour involved.
Singh further said that a style that is simple, more trans-seasonal and long-lasting will win the war on buying. “This is majorly driven by the increased cost of living and the news of COVID-19 knocking on our doors again this new year.”
The cost-effective items in one’s wardrobe, for instance, a T-shirt will see a spike in sales, and individuals will try and pull off multiple looks with the same bottoms and layering items.

Most sought after colours
For men’s wear, Singh said that core colours like black, navy, olive and dark maroon will generally do better than others. In 2023, people will invest in more basic styling and core palette colours. Last year, we saw wines and evergreens gaining traction for men, but these tones will evolve into new shades in similar families — dark wine can turn into slightly more redder tones of brick red or oxide orange.

He added that new tones of mustards into caramel and pastels will continue reigning in vacay stories, while neutrals in off-whites, grays and beiges will prevail in giving depth and matching ability to consumers.
As for women’s wear, Singh believes that it will have a wider array of colours than men’s. “Western casuals will have brighter colours compared to the midtones of men’s fashion as this market is influenced by the glamorous world of music and cinema,” he said.
In 2022, there was a contrast of nudes against bright colours like fuschia pink, blue and hues of green. This year, the palette will evolve with neon colours. “We will see neon orange in action, while the bright colours will see more greens dominated by emerald tones, followed by pine and pickle green,” Singh said.
He noted that ‘Digital Lavender’ will have a major presence this year. And as blues might fade away in ‘23, we might see various shades of teal in action. Meanwhile, nudes and whites will be the palette which will help fashionistas carry bright shades.

Moreover, luscious red, an empowering colour to showcase your bold presence will win everybody’s hearts. “Tranquil blue will be elevated as a summer essential, while dark brown will be a winter favourite,” he said. But the colours that will stand out are soft pastel pink, hyper Y2K pink and sunset orange, making any gal shine bright like a diamond.
Prints to denims
Cyberpunk will be the dominating trend for men. This is an evolution of Gen-Z’s keen interest in meta and Y2K subcultures, which will include baggier jeans, chain accessories, leathers and spiked logos. “This is a more punk and emo version of the Y2K trends of last year,” said Singh. He added that a lot of European brands like Vetements and Balenciaga showcased punk rock-based collections for SS23, which will motivate more commercial brands to take this trend to retail.
Since a tailored garment will always be more sustainable and not mass-produced, tailoring is another trend that will have a huge presence this year. “It is the time for suits to become cool again. Slightly relaxed silhouettes, old-school double breasted blazers, “alt suits” and resort blazers will also have a good presence in the market,” he added.

Moreover, this year will see traditional ideas of masculinity defining menswear go for a toss as Gen-Zs coming to power will redefine old-school norms and inspire designers to rethink their outlook on men’s fashion.
Women’s wear fashion designers will be taking up the summer travel theme where escapism will be seen as a relief to uplift the mood of the consumer. This is teamed with soft utility details that are very light and niche. Prints will govern the trends with painterly florals, splicing colour blocks and monochrome patterns supporting the idea. Denim will also see a major comeback this year.

“Cyberpunk, minimalism, active courtside tennis looks, resort style and psychedelic skater outfits will be the hottest trends of the year,” concluded Singh.
