Honey, you don’t need to work after marriage. I am there to earn.
Education was enough, you don’t need to go out there and earn.
You are a mother now. Is your career that important?
You can’t be a mother and an ambitious career woman at the same time.
Stop being so selfish. Your job is not that important. The kids will suffer.
How many times did you have to listen to this because you wanted to have a successful career? How many men have to listen to this ever in their life? Why hasn’t this mentality changed even in the 21st century? A woman’s career is always seen as a trivial thing which can be sacrificed at the drop of a hat.
The BBC Controversy
A recently released Christmas advertisement by BBC, which was meant to portray a message about families coming together to celebrate the festival has turned out to irk women instead. It shows a mother struggling to manage her office work while trying to give time to her family. In the end, she flees her office to be with her son who has been waiting for her all day. After the advert was released, women began complaining about how it shows that the kids of working mothers are sad and neglected. Another said how BBC was taking working women on a guilt trip and how women have no choice but to work full time while taking care of both worlds. Yet another pointed out how the father in the ad was shown as a passive member of the family. People also lashed out at BBC’s gender pay gap and how the ad shows that working mothers can be unreliable workers.

Sadly this is the mentality that prevails around working women and especially working mothers that either they shirk work for personal reasons or neglect the family for their career. And shockingly, it is a worldwide phenomenon! Even developed countries are no better when it comes to such discrimination.

For those women who get subdued by societal pressures, it should be a wakeup call that the time to speak up is now. It is only a balancing act that can be taken care of by us and being natural at multitasking, we will certainly do a good job. All we need is a little support from our family and friends to show the world how we can be trustworthy workers and caring family member at the same time.
