Why Is Khajjiar Mini Switzerland of India: Khajjiar is a small hill station nestled in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is affectionately known as the Mini Switzerland of India because of its striking resemblance to the Swiss landscape. Rolling meadows, forests, a peaceful lake and snow-tipped mountains combine to create a picture-perfect view that reminds visitors of the Alps. In this article, we explain what makes Khajjiar so special and why it earned its delightful nickname.
Khajjiar lies about 24 km from Dalhousie on a small plateau nearly 6,500 feet above sea level. It is a hill station near the town of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. It sits at the foothills of the Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas, surrounded by lush forests and vast green meadows.

Khajjiar’s vast saucer-shaped meadow looks like a scene straight out of a picture postcard. “Set against the backdrop of dense pines, deodars and lush green meadow, Khajjiar is exquisitely nestled down in the foothills of the imposing Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas. The dish-shaped Khajjiar provides a panoramic and breathtaking perspective to visitors”, states the official portal of District Chamba, Government of Himachal Pradesh. The lush green grass fields surrounded by dense deodar and pine forests and the snow-draped peaks in the distance create a soothing and scenic backdrop.
At the centre of the meadow lies Khajjiar Lake, a small, calm lake that adds peaceful charm to the setting. The shoreline and mirror-like water reflect the sky and mountains, making it a favourite spot for photography and quiet walks.
Khajjiar enjoys cool weather for much of the year. In summer, it’s a refreshing escape from heat, with pleasant temperatures and lush greenery. In winter, light snowfall blankets the meadows and forests, giving it a magical winter-wonderland feel much like Switzerland’s alpine views.

This moment put Khajjiar on the global tourism map and remains a proud part of its identity.

Near the Khajjiar Lake stands an old temple dedicated to Khajji Nag, rich in history and cultural significance. “The temple dates back to the 10th century and is interspersed with different patterns and images on the ceiling and wooden posts. A curious blend of Hindu and Mughal styles of architecture is reflected in the wooden carvings on the ceilings and wooden posts”, states District Chamba, Government of Himachal Pradesh official portal.
This sanctuary around Khajjiar offers opportunities to spot birds and wildlife while walking through peaceful forests. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) official portal states, “Khajjiar serves as the starting point for treks to Chamba, Dalhousie and Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary among others. Zorbing, which involves rolling downhill from inside a plastic ‘zorb’, is a popular recreational activity of this place.”
Visitors can enjoy paragliding, zorbing, zipline, zanswing, camping, rock climbing, nature walks, and even short treks over the beautiful hills when weather permits.
