What Is Besan Or Gram Flour?
Besan, also known as gram flour, is a type of pulse flour that is made from chana dal or chickpeas. It is widely used in the cuisines of the Indian subcontinent and is known for its high carbohydrate and fibre content, lack of gluten, and high protein content compared to other types of flour. Here are three quick besan recipes that you can whip up for breakfast.
1. Besan Chilla Recipe
Ingrediants:
- 1½ cups of besan
- ¼ cup of rava / suji
- ¼ cup of curd
- ¼ teaspoon of turmeric
- ¾ teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of water
- Oil
How To Make Besan Chilla?
- Start by preparing the batter for the besan chilla. In a mixer jar, add 1½ cup of besan, ¼ cup of rava, ¼ cup of curd, ¼ teaspoon of turmeric, and ¾ teaspoon of salt.
- Next, add 1 cup of water to the mixture and blend it till it forms a smooth batter.
- Pour the smooth batter into a large bowl and let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Now, to prepare the besan chilla, heat the dosa pan over medium heat and pour the chilla batter.
- Make sure to spread the dosa batter as thinly as possible.
- Once the batter starts bubbling on the sides, flip the chilla and spread 1 teaspoon of oil.
- Once the besan chilla is evenly cooked on both sides, serve with tomato sauce or green chutney and enjoy!
2. Besan Halwa Recipe
Ingredients:
- ½ cup of milk
- 3 tablespoons of besan
- 1 teaspoon chopped pista
- 1 teaspoon of chopped almonds
- ⅛ teaspoon of powdered green elaichi
- 8 strands of saffron
- 1 ½ tablespoons of sugar
- 1 ½ tablespoons of ghee
- 5 ml of water
How To Make Besan Halwa?
- Start by heating a thick-bottomed pan over low heat.
- Next, add 1 ½ tablespoons of ghee and 3 tablespoons of besan to the pan.
- Mix the two continuously till it becomes slightly dry, and make sure that the besan is evenly cooked and slightly browned.
- Next, check for a nutty aroma, and once you can smell it, pour ½ cup of milk.
- Make sure to keep stirring after you add the milk and add 1 ½ tablespoons of sugar to the mixture.
- Keep stirring the mixture to avoid any lumps.
- Now add the soaked saffron solution and keep stirring the mixture for 10 minutes.
- Next, add ⅛ teaspoon of powdered green elaichi and keep mixing the besan halwa evenly till the besan halwa starts coming together and starts to separate from the sides of the pan.
- Add 1 teaspoon of chopped pista and 1 teaspoon of chopped almonds to this besan halwa.
- Serve it hot and enjoy!
3. Besan Tomato Veg Omlette Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of besan
- 1 finely chopped onion
- 1 grated tomato
- 1 sliced tomato
- 1 teaspoon of finely chopped coriander leaves
- 2 finely chopped green chillis
- 1 ½ teaspoon of chilli powder
- ½ teaspoon of ajwain
- 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee
- Salt to taste
How To Make Tomato Besan Veg Omelette?
- Start by mixing all the ingredients except the sliced tomato in a large bowl.
- Next, add around 1 cup of water to the mix and form a thick batter. Once you have reached a thick consistency, cover the batter and let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee to a pan or tawa and evenly spread around 2 ladles of the batter on it. Make sure the batter is spread as thinly as possible.
- Now, add 2-3 tomato slices on top and put the additional ghee or oil around the edges.
- Cover the omelette with a lid and cook it on low heat for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes, flip the omelette over, add some ghee around it, and increase the heat to medium. Cook the omelette for another 5 minutes without the lid.
- Your tomato besan vegetable omelette is ready. Serve it hot with ketchup or green chutney.
