Himachal Pradesh is preparing to open India's longest ropeway, which would provide tourists with a smooth, picturesque journey of 40 kilometres between Parwanoo and Shimla. This ambitious project, announced by the Himachal Pradesh government, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the region while increasing tourism. Here are five important facts to know about this historic project.

According to the Himachal Pradesh government, the ropeway will connect the towns of Parwanoo and Shimla. Currently, passengers must endure a difficult 90-kilometre journey between these two attractions, with significant traffic, particularly during peak seasons. The new ropeway will reduce travel time, providing a continuous two-hour journey over stunning scenery.

India’s Longest Ropeway in Himachal Pradesh

The Himachal Pradesh government has allocated INR 5,571 crore for the construction of this ropeway. Developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the project is set to begin soon, with the international tendering process underway. As per Ajay Sharma, Director of the Ropeways Transport Development Corporation (RTDC), the project is expected to be operational by 2030. The system will have an initial capacity to transport 904 passengers per hour, in each direction, and an annual capacity of 25 lakh passengers. By 2063, the ropeway will be capable of handling up to one crore passengers annually.

The ropeway will feature state-of-the-art cable cars equipped with either mono-cable detachable gondola (MDG) systems or tri-cable 3S systems. The MDG system can carry 8-10 passengers per car, while the tri-cable system can accommodate up to 25 passengers. These modern systems will ensure a comfortable and efficient ride, with passengers enjoying stunning views of the region’s natural beauty during the journey.
