Despite being primarily an Indian festival, Diwali is celebrated across the globe. There are several countries where Diwali is declared a National holiday as well. Let’s take a look at the list of countries where Diwali is celebrated like India.

Malaysia

For Malaysian people, Diwali is a public holiday. From streets to houses, everything is decorated with lights and colourful traditional items. Several cultural events and performances are organised and people enjoy traditional Indian cuisines on this auspicious day in Malaysia. People in Malaysia call Diwali ‘Hari Diwali’ which means ‘Green Diwali’ as fireworks are banned in Malaysia.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a neighbouring country of India and here also Diwali is celebrated like in India. Sri Lankan Hindus traditionally celebrate diwali. They decorate their houses with diyas and candles and perform Diwali puja with all the rituals.

United States Of America

Indian Hindus constitute a major part of America’s total population. Thus, to ensure their religious beliefs, Diwali is considered a National Holiday in America. Not only Hindus, but other communities in America also celebrate Diwali. Even the White House in America also hosts Diwali celebrations.

South Africa

South African Indians celebrate Diwali in South Africa with the same zeal and enthusiasm. A grand celebration is planned in Durban city of South Africa because it hosts the majority of the Indian Hindu population.

Singapore

There is a public holiday on the occasion of Diwali (diwali fairs in delhi) in Singapore because of the majority of the Indian population. Hindus are in majority in Singapore and thus they celebrate Diwali in Singapore like in India. There is a region in Singapore called ‘Little India’ where all the Indians come together to celebrate this festival of light and distribute sweets without crackers.

Nepal

Nepal is among the closest neighbouring countries of India. It has a majority of Hindu population due to which Diwali is celebrated here with the same enthusiasm as in India. Diwali (places you can visit during diwali weekend) is known as ‘Tihar’ in Nepal and it goes for 5 days. Not only do people worship gods but they also worship animals on Diwali, especially dogs.
