Assam Manohari Gold Tea Creates History, Sold For Rs 50000/kg: A Look At World’s Most Expensive And Rarest Tea

For a chai lover, no price might be too much for the beverage, but the truth remains it can fetch quite whopping prices. On Tuesday, Manohari Gold Tea scored a record-breaking sum of Rs 50,000 per kg at an auction in Guwahati. The same tea was auctioned for Rs 39,001 per kg last year. But what makes this tea so exclusive that tea connoisseurs are willing to shell a price so high? Here’s what you need to know.

Why Is It So Expensive?

“Ours is a specialty golden orthodox tea made from the buds of P-126, the finest tea clone grown under the perfect climatic conditions during the second flush. Unlike the traditional Assam teas processed by machines, this is done manually with the utmost care”, Rajan Lohia, owner of Manohari Gold Estate, told a media house.

Dà Hóng Páo Tea

Known for having medicinal properties, Dà Hóng Páo Tea is considered to be the most expensive in the world. According to legend, a Ming ruler was cured by drinking this tea. It is also known as Imperial Red Robe. A kilo of its leaves costs around $ 1.2 million!

Vintage Narcissus Wuyi Oolong Tea

This Oolong tea is cultivated in the Wuyi mountains. It is named after a Greek mythological figure, Narcissus. This tea has a distant flavor of wood, flowers, and chocolate, and is oxidized only 60% to improve its taste with time. A kilogram of it comes for $ 6500 or Rs 45,000 approx.

PG Tips Diamond Tea

PG tips diamond tea is manufactured by Unilever UK. On their 75th anniversary, PG Tips launched a designer diamond studded tea bag worth $ 15,000 or Rs 10,36,000 approx. Each bag was studded with 280 diamonds. Shocking, right?

Panda Dung Tea

The Panda Dung Tea, cultivated in China, got its name because excreta of Panda dung is used as a fertilizer to grow it. It is said that a kilo of its tea leaves come for $ 7000, which roughly converts to Rs 48,300.
