A trip to Kerala is incomplete without going for an Alleppey Backwaters outing. Just take a Kettuvallam or houseboat if you are a mood for luxury or a regular boat (chakara or canoe) to see the sights of endless water meeting the sky and greenery all around. If you are opting for a boat and take a long backwaters tour, make sure to book a homestay near the canal. If you are on a budget then opt for the local ferries (Rs 7 to Rs 40) or opt for the government ferries that go to Krishnapuram, Kottayam and Nedumudy but that would give you a view from a distance. Lush paddy fields, green highlands and scenic stretches of backwaters await when you cruise through the waters of Kumarakom. The village is famous for its bird sanctuary, Pathiramanal Lake, driftwood museum and other attractions. Looking at the scenic stretch of Vembanad Lake is a must for your Kumarakom Backwaters cruise. To explore Kumarakom Backwaters, you can reach the village by train after getting off at the Kottayam railway station and then hire a private cab or taxi for the rest of the journey.

The Kollam Backwaters are known for their zig-zag water channels with canals criss-crossing each other on the beautiful waterway network of the Ashtamudi Lake. Kollam is also known as the Gateway city of Kerala Backwaters. On your Kollam Backwaters exploration cruise, makes sure to visit the Munroe Island, Alumkadavu village and the ashram of Mata Amirthanandamayi. You can opt for various packages including a round trip, Kollam to Alleppey , Kollam to Kumarakom or Kollam to cochin backwaters cruise. The profusion of greenery that you can view on a trip to the Kuttanad Backwaters is a sight for the sore eyes. Beautiful white and red water lilies can be seen here and the dikes here resemble that of Holland. Your journey via the Kuttanad backwaters will begin from Kodimatha boat jetty in Kottayam district and end at Alappuzha. Make a pit stop at some of the restaurants that serve delightful freshwater delicacies to make the ride memorable. In fact, this can be one of the best options when planning a honeymoon trip to Kerala.
Kasaragod Backwaters
Opt for the Kasaragod Backwaters cruise to see the chain of forts situated along Chandragiri River and take in the beauty of Valiyaparamba. This is a very popular backwater stretch in north Kerala and has a cluster of islands surrounded by languid water that can relax even the busiest of people with everything on their mind. To reach Kasargod, you can either come from the Payyanur railway station or the Calicut International Airport.
