On his 84th birth anniversary, June 27, 2023, we are looking back at the equation he shared with Asha Bhosle, another legendary singer of the Hindi film industry.

How ‘Zindagi Ke Safar Mein’ Resolved Fight Between Asha Bhosle and R D Burman?

When Bhosle appeared in ‘India’s Best Dancer’ season two, she shared that once the couple got into a fight. In a fit of rage, she went to live with her children for about 15 days.

After two weeks, Burman and Bhosle met in their professional capacities as music directors and singers. She shared that the two were still fighting and ignoring each other.

As they went ahead to start practising for a song, ‘Zindagi ke safar mein’ played on the radio. Sang by Kishore Kumar, the song is from ‘Aap Ki Kasam’, and it has a message that once time is gone, it never comes back. Bhosle sang its first few lines on the show:

ज़िन्दगी के सफ़र में गुज़र जाते हैं जो मकाम, वो फिर नहीं आते वो फिर नहीं आते

She added that after hearing the song, the couple looked at each other with tears in their eyes and forgot everything. They asked each other why they fight? Burman replied that maybe people need something new in their life, therefore, they fight.

RD Burman’s Marriage With Asha Bhosle

Burman married Rita Patel, one of his ardent fans and whom he met in Darjeeling in 1966. However, things didn't work out between them, and the couple got divorced in 1971. In 1980, Burman and Bhosle got married.

According to the report, Burman proposed to Bhosle for marriage, however, she rejected it. Though the music director was younger than the singer, it was not the reason why Bhosle rejected his proposal. She was grieving the loss of her late husband Ganpatrao Bhosle, Lata Maneshkar’s secretary.

However, the music director was a romantic and persistent man who pursued the love of his life until she said, 'I do'. According to a report published in Amar Ujala, Lata Mangeshkar also helped Burman to get a yes from Bhosle.

They loved each other and had the utmost respect for their work. Many media reports suggest that Burman got addicted to alcoholism and smoking in the late 1980s. Around this time, the couple was reported to be separated, but they continued to admire each other. Burman died of cardiac arrest on January 4, 1994.
