Hollywood actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are now officially divorced! This comes eight years after the Maria actress filed a plea to end their two-year marriage in 2016, citing "irreconcilable differences." Jolie's lawyer, James Simon, confirmed the development to People while Pitt's representative remained mum. The couple, who got married in 2014, share six children. Here's more to it.

According to Jolie's team of lawyers, the actors signed the divorce petition on December 30. In a statement, Simon told People, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago."
He added that while Jolie (49) is "exhausted," she is "relieved this one part is over." Reports said that she has foregone spousal and family support from Pitt while the documents also don't include anything about their children. No one commented from Pitt's side though.
The Eternals star approached the court to dissolve her marriage to Pitt (61) on September 19, 2016, a few days after an incident aboard a private plane where the actress claimed Pitt was abusive towards their children and her. It was also said that the Fight Club star “choked” one of their kids, “struck another in the face,” and “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her.”In April this year, Jolie’s lawyer, in a claim, stated Pitt’s alleged physical abuse “started well before” the 2016 event.
Investigations were conducted in 2016 but he wasn't charged and Jolie also didn't file any case.
Around December that year, the actors issued a joint statement hinting at reaching a deal where they would handle their divorce privately while keeping future details of their split confidential via a private judge.
In the following years, the former couple engaged in "strained" divorce negotiationsregarding custodyand other legal issues concerning Château Miraval, their $164mn French estate and winery.
Third Divorce For Angelina Jolie, Second For Brad Pitt
Pitt was Jolie's third husband after Jonny Lee Miller (married in 1996 and divorced in 2000) and Billy Bob Thornton (married in 2000 and divorced in 2003). Meanwhile, Pitt was earlier married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston from 2000 to 2005.
Jolie and Pitt got involved romantically while filming the romantic crime film Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005 and the rest is history. Pitt is currently dating 34-year-old Los Angeles-based jewellery executive Ines de Ramon while Jolie is reportedly seeing British rapper Akala.
