While the country was celebrating its 77th Independence Day, the actor took to his social media handles to announce that he received his Indian citizenship. “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!” read his caption.

However, renouncing Canadian citizenship did not settle well with Twitterati. A person added an image from ‘Hera Pheri’ and wrote, “Usually Punjabis go to Canada for Canadian citizenship but you’re the first Punjabi to come back to India from Canada for Indian citizenship. How did you do that?

Another user created a collage of Akshay Kumar dancing and captioned it, “Akshay Kumar happy to have citizenship (transferred) from Canada to India.”
