skincare guide for brides to be

Sensitive skin is the most difficult to take care of. You have to use specific products or else you might have to deal with pimples, breakouts and other issues. Therefore, it is crucial that brides-to-be start preparing their skin at least four to six weeks before the big day.

In most cases, it is suggested to do a patch test of every product, even the homemade masks and scrubs, to ensure nothing reacts with your face. To help you achieve radiant skin on your wedding day, we spoke to Shahnaz Husain, Hair & Beauty Expert, and Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, Aesthetic Physician and Medical Director at Isaac Luxe, to get insights into the skincare routine and products for brides-to-be with a sensitive dermal layer.

Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain has always promoted the use of natural and organic ingredients, irrespective of skin type. She said they are safe and non-toxic. She suggests using Ayurvedic products, especially for sensitive skin. They are free from harmful chemicals like sulphates, parabens, synthetic colours and mineral oils.

Cleaning & Toning

The first step to skincare is removing all the makeup and cleaning your face. Then comes the toning. Dr Gupta advises women with sensitive skin to use products free from synthetic fragrances and alcohol.

Our expert suggests picking non-foaming and mild cleansers because they would reduce the chances of breakouts, redness, inflammation and pimples. You can use a toner containing spring water, vitamin E, glycolipids and omega 3 and 6. For utmost care of your lips, pick a lip balm with SPF protection.

Scrubs

Dr Gupta promotes brides-to-be with sensitive skin to pick scrubs or skin exfoliants that can keep irritation at bay. Therefore, a product that can reduce inflammation must be picked.

Moisturiser

You should pick moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid, ceramides, rosehip and niacinamide. These aim to help with acne, blemishes, dark spots and scars.

In some cases, Husain, suggested natural moisturising and soothing agents like aloe vera. It will reduce redness in case a product has reacted with your face. You can also apply sandalwood paste as a pack. It acts as a cooling agent to reduce itching and redness.

Our beauty expert has a pro tip for you if you ever feel itchiness on your face. You can wash the dermal layer with vinegar or baking soda by adding a tablespoon of either of the ingredients to a mug of water. You can also create a paste of rose water and ground poppy seeds.

Essential Oils

Brides-to-be with sensitive skin can also use essential oils formulated with natural ingredients. Husain advises being cautious before using them as they can be highly potent.

“One has to learn how to mix them with carrier oils, mineral water or rose water, in the prescribed proportions,” Husain added. Some of the essential oils used in beauty care are oils of sandalwood, rose water, tea tree, rosemary, mint, basil, eucalyptus, jasmine, lavender, geranium, etc.

Here are a few remedies shared by Shahnaz Husain that you can try at home,

  • Add 10 drops of tea tree oil to 5 ml of rose water. Apply directly on pimples or acne with a cotton swab.
  • Add 10 drops of sandalwood oil to 100 ml of rose water to make a skin tonic. This also has anti-ageing and protective benefits.
  • Add 10 drops of essential oil rose to 1 cup of pure almond oil to the water in your bathtub, for a luxury bath.

Dr Gupta says that women with sensitive skin must not skip sunscreen at any cost. They can use the one with zinc oxide as it will be highly beneficial.

Disclaimer: Remember that Essential Oils should not be used by themselves. Always do a patch test before applying anything on your entire face.
