In a world driven by social media and its everchanging trends, one may get caught up in baseless skincare tips and skin remedies without any scientific backing. These popular skin remedies may not always make your skin look flawless and cause your pimple scars to worsen, deteriorating your skin condition.
To know more about the issue, we spoke to Dr Nishtha Patel, MBBS, MD Dermatologist, Consultant Dermatologist, Kosmoderma. She highlighted the side effects of popular home remedies for skin to treat pimple scars.
Side Effects Of Home Remedies On Skin
Here are some popular home remedies to treat pimple scars and their side effects:
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is believed to contain lighting properties due to its Vitamin C content. “Applying lemon juice directly on your face can irritate and burn the skin disrupting its natural pH, leading to dry and sensitive skin,” says, Dr Patel.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is often used for exfoliating, however, its extremely alkaline property can disturb the skin’s natural barrier causing skin irritation and dryness.
Toothpaste
Toothpaste is one of the most commonly used home remedies for flawless skin. However, due to their harmful contents like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and alcohol, your skin may burn.
Picking or Squeezing
Our expert says, “It is a habit for many that they keep touching or picking their pimples, without realising that our hands carry a lot of germs which can worsen active acne. This can lead to infection and result in deeper scarring.”

Apple Cider Vinegar
One of the most popular home remedies, Apple Cider Vinegar is known for its antibacterial properties. Dr Patel says, “It can cause burns, irritation and prolonged redness on the skin disturbing its natural barrier and worsening its condition.”
