We all know about the adverse effects of immense sweating and the scorching sun rays on our skin. It is high time we understand how these conditions are also harmful to our scalp health causing oily buildup, dandruff, and itchiness. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, dandruff affects approximately 70 per cent of Indians regardless of gender.
To understand more about the problem and seek its solutions, we spoke to Dr Akshay Batra, Trichologist and Managing Director, Dr Batra’s® Group of Companies. Follow a haircare routine advised him to protect your hair from intense heat exposure.
Tips To Improve Scalp Health In Summers
Scalp Massage
Regular scalp massage can boost blood flow promoting scalp health. Massage gently by applying oil on your scalp or massage while shampooing using your fingertips.
Hydrate Your Hair
Use a gentle shampoo to moisturise your scalp. Ensure using products infused with ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, or argan oil, as they help retain moisture.
Use Chemical-Free Shampoo
Dr Batra suggests washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo free from sulfates, and parabens, with a pH balance of 5.5 as they “eliminate mineral build-up from your hair and scalp.” Due to increased sweating in summer, you must wash your hair at least twice a week. Shampoos containing Thuja Occidentalis are highly effective for dandruff-prone scalps.
Use Anti-Frizz Products
Add anti-frizz products like serums, creams, or oils to your hair care routine for increased hair care. “Seek products enriched with ingredients like silicone or glycerin, which work to smooth the hair cuticle and combat frizz effectively,” says Dr Batra.

Protect Hair From Sun
Cover your hair with a hat or scarf to prevent sun rays from directly falling on them. This protects your strands against dryness and colour fading.
Holistic Care
Natural ingredients (Kitchen Ingredients For Skin Care) offer a “holistic approach to maintaining hair health” by addressing the root cause of your hair and scalp problems. Dr Batra suggests, “Gummies and scalp masks with goodness of Biotin also known as Vitamin B7, grape seed extract and other essential Vitamins like A, B6, B12, D2, and E are known to promote hair growth, strengthen hair follicles, and improve overall scalp health.”
