During the ongoing festive and wedding seasons, we always will remain in a hurry. The rooms need cleaning, guests keep coming in, and there's a permanent sense of urgency. In this rush, we often ask our cousins or friends to do our makeup and end up sharing their cosmetics. Sounds relatable? However, this may not serve you well, as per Dr. Geeta Grewal, cosmetologist and founder of 9 Muses Wellness Clinic.
Why You Shouldn't Share Makeup Items?
Dr. Grewal says, "Even though sharing beauty products can be tempting and is often seen as a sign of camaraderie and fun, the potential risks may surpass the advantages." There is a high chance of you contracting infections as "exchanging makeup can result in the spread of bacteria and viruses and can result in skin irritations, breakouts, or infections, which is the least desirable outcome during a special event."
Elaborating, she says, "The skin harbors different microorganisms, and by using brushes, sponges, or fingers to apply products, we may unknowingly transfer harmful pathogens to the product."
"This is especially worrying with products such as lipsticks, eyeliners, and cream-based items that can contain bacteria," Dr. Grewal points out.
Apart from catching infections, you may also get allergic reactions after sharing makeup items. The cosmetologist highlights, "A product that is safe for one person may contain ingredients that cause an allergic reaction in someone else."
Dr. Grewal further mentions that getting infected and allergies aside, "Sharing makeup can also result in disappointment or frustration if the expected color and finish are not achieved due to mismatched expectations."

That's because "each person possesses unique skin types, tones, and sensitivities. One product may be amazing for one person but not right for another individual."
Citing an example, she explains, "A foundation that perfectly matches one person's skin tone may appear ashy or unnatural on another individual."
Sanitize Makeup Products Before Sharing, Suggests Expert
She suggests "hosting a makeup exchange for a safe way to improve beauty routines. Invite guests to bring their favorite products for a fun swap. For those who want to enhance their beauty looks while still being cautious, consider offering a makeup swap where everyone brings their favorite products, and they can demonstrate application techniques without direct sharing."
Another suggestion she has is conducting "a makeup session where products are applied on one person, minimizing direct contact and promoting safety."
Dr. Grewal concludes, "Prioritizing personal hygiene and individual products will keep everyone safe and ensure that everyone looks and feels their best during those special moments."
