Exfoliation is an important part of our skincare routine. However, it is focused on the face only. Exfoliation is important for maintaining healthy skin across the entire body. While many of us religiously exfoliate our faces to ensure a glowing complexion, we may overlook certain areas of our bodies, particularly those with darker pigmentation or prone to roughness. Dark areas, such as elbows, knees, underarms, and intimate areas, can greatly benefit from regular exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and brighten the skin. In light of the same, we spoke to Yukta Raghu, CEO and co-founder of Afforest Green Beauty. Read on to learn from experts how you can exfoliate the dark areas of your body safely.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemicals are considered effective in dealing with the dark areas of the body. But, it has side effects too. So, if you have sensitive skin, you should consult your dermatologist before applying them. Chemical exfoliants contain ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) that dissolve dead skin cells and unclog pores. Products containing glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid are particularly effective for dark corners of the body.

Physical Exfoliation

Physical exfoliants utilise abrasive particles or tools to manually slough away dead skin cells. Choose a gentle scrub or exfoliating glove specifically designed for use on the body. Massage the product onto damp skin in circular motions, paying extra attention to dark corners. Avoid using harsh scrubs with large, jagged particles, as these can cause micro-tears in the skin. Instead opt for finer exfoliants, such as sugar or finely ground nuts, for a safer and more effective exfoliation experience.

If you are someone who tends to avoid chemical products, DIY is the solution for you. You can create effective exfoliating treatments at home using natural ingredients. Alternatively, combining yoghurt with ground oatmeal and a few drops of lemon juice forms a soothing paste that brightens and softens dark corners.
