The hair may start thinning with age, but premature hair loss can be due to various reasons, including a scalp problem like dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis. Hair loss can be also caused by hormonal imbalances, as well as hair damage and even stress. In women, post-pregnancy hair loss is very common. It is thought to be due to a sudden fall in the oestrogen level. However, once the hormones settle down, the hair loss may also stop. In men, hormones and hereditary factors play a role in hair loss, especially in what is known as “male pattern baldness.” Another common reason for hair loss is due to nutritional deficiencies and an anaemic condition. A lack of minerals and the B-complex Vitamins can set off hair loss. Hair is fed by the nutrients in the bloodstream, which are carried to the hair follicles. Therefore, our daily diet plays a very significant role as far as the health of the hair is concerned. Thyroid imbalances can also trigger hair loss. Consult your doctor, as it can be detected by a simple blood test and can be corrected with medication.
Another cause of hair loss is often overlooked and most people are now aware of it. It is caused by trauma to the hair. Habitual tying of the hair tightly can trigger off hair loss, due to trauma caused to the roots, especially at the hairline. Hair loss or hair breakage can also occur due to the use of chemical hair styling, dyeing and colouring. Chemical treatments can alter the structure of the hair, causing it to become weak and brittle. They can also upset the normal balances of the scalp. Excessive use of hair dryers, wire rollers, wrong brushes and so on can also cause enough trauma to lead to thinning of the hair. Yet another cause of hair loss is a condition known as alopecia areata, in which there is localised or patchy baldness. It can occur at any age and even to children. The exact cause is not known, but could be related to the immune system.
Oils
In cases of hair loss, head massage is not recommended, as it can cause further hair fall. In hair loss, the roots may be weak and massage of the scalp prompts more hair to fall out. However, oil can be applied to the scalp and left on overnight. Pure coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil or sesame seed (til) oil may be used. Warmed oil helps better absorption. Apply oil and then move the scalp gently, in small circular movements, using only the fingertips.

Cleansing Of Scalp
Cleansing of the scalp is of importance, but mild shampoos should be used. Some anti-dandruff shampoos have a harsh action on the scalp. They may help to control the condition initially, but the problem recurs. This may be due to the fact that they disturb the normal balance, or stimulate the scalp further, leading to excessive build-up of dead cells and pore-clogging. The scalp and hair should be washed two or three times a week, using very little shampoo. We have treated premature hair loss with herbal hair tonics, containing ingredients recommended by Ayurveda, like shikakai, amla, reetha, brahmi, bhringaraj, jatamansi, etc. They restore the normal balance and also have curative properties. They are known to check hair loss and promote hair growth. Brahmi, for example, is said to induce relaxation and is useful in treating stress-related hair loss. Also, herbal ingredients have a gentle action on the hair and scalp. Many of them are effective against bacterial and fungal infections, while others have cooling and soothing effects.

Diet and lifestyle are an integral part of the treatment. Fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouted grains and lentils, as well as yogurt, should be included in the daily diet. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily and include nimbu paani and freshly extracted juices of fruits and vegetables. They should be diluted with water. Some amount of daily exercise, including breathing exercise, is useful. They increase oxygenation and reduce stress. However, before adopting any diet or exercise programme, it is best to consult your doctor. Also, ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.
