Hair breakage is the most common problem these days and this is irrespective to all the hair types. Hair breakage can happen for a variety of reasons, including specific hair products, diet, stress among others. It can make hair look frizzy or coarse either at the ends or near the top, or crown, of the head. Sameer Hamdare, Zonal Technical Manager at Streax Professional, says that in most cases, hair breakage is a temporary condition, and people can repair their hair and restore its strength by using products and home remedies.

But many people also face weak hair follicles, damage due to chemical processing and dry cuticles and these all contribute to hair that easily breaks and falls out. To prevent hair breakage, some extra care can help you keep your tresses shiny, healthy and strong. Here are 7 ways shared by Hamdare that will help in stopping hair breakage:

Don’t comb the hair when it is wet, as wet hair is more likely to break easily

wet hair

Wet hair is fragile, weaker and more susceptible to breakage. It can easily break or become weak. You have to let it dry, at least 80 per cent of it should be before you use a hairdryer. Or simply let it dry naturally and then use a wide-tooth comb to avoid breakage.

Use a serum or leave-in conditioner as it will make combing/ brushing easy

serum conditioner

Apply a leave-in conditioner or a light serum to ensure you lock in the moisture after washing your hair. This helps in detangling your hair easily, especially if it is long and that will help your hair from breakage.

Always use a wide toothcomb for brushing/combing the hair

wide comb

First of all, never brush your hair when it is wet. Let it dry naturally. Next, se a wide-tooth comb, and work on your mane from the ends of your hair and up. This will open the tangles from your hair. It will then help the hair from breakage.

Use lukewarm to cold water to wash your hair, as using hot water it led to dry hair and then later it led to breakage.

Washing your hair using hot water strips away the hair from natural oils, the scalp loses its moisture and causes dry hair. This shall make your tresses look dry and frizzy, and lead to making your hair more brittle and prone to breaking. Therefore use lukewarm to cold water to wash your hair that will avoid hair breakage.

Use a PH Balance shampoo and conditioner after doing a hair colouring or straightening service.

The best pH level for hair shampoo is between 5 and 7. Anything more can disturb the cuticles and can cause irritation to your scalp. Coloured and chemically treated hair should be taken care of, if not then cuticles become rough which can increase the friction between the fibres which leads to hair breakage.

Don’t tie a very tight ponytail, and don’t tie your hair without detangling them.

Avoid tying your hair tightly as this will make your hair weak and loosen from the scalp. Always detangle your hair before tying it up to avoid major hair breakage.
