While we shouldn’t avoid wearing face masks to protect ourselves from infections and bacteria, there are a few things that we can do to not irritate our skin. In comparison to other body parts, the skin on the face is the most delicate one. Continuous friction from the mask’s fabric compromises the skin's natural barrier and causes rashes. By covering the mouth for long-duration our breath traps inside causing other skin woes like acne and pimples. This happens because trapped air creates a warm, moist environment and in the presence of sweat and oil the skin can have breakouts. But don’t need to worry because we are here with some natural tips that will help you to maintain radiance on your skin even while wearing a mask for hours.
Remove Makeup Using Coconut Oil
If you have applied any kind of cream, moisturiser or makeup products that are likely to make you sweat, you must remove it gently before wearing the mask on the face. Coconut oil is one of the best natural ingredients to remove makeup or any layering from the skin's surface. It absorbs in the skin like magic and has a low molecular weight and beneficial fatty acids.

Clean Your Face With Milk & Honey Before Applying Mask
Earlier when there were no face washes, people use to exfoliate their faces mostly from milk and honey. These two are great for gentle exfoliation as they are loaded with lactic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid and enzymes that removes skin open pores respectively. Clean your face with this daily before putting your face mask on.
Steps
- In a bowl, mix 2 teaspoons of honey with 2 teaspoons of raw milk.
- Massage gently 3-5 minutes, but do not irritate the skin that has already become red and itchy.
- Rinse it off with normal water. This cleanser will clear your pores, remove oil, and will make you look fresh.
Never Skip Using Moisturising Sunscreen
If you think you can skip applying a protective layer of sunscreen under your face mask, then you’re probably wrong. In fact, now it is more necessary because your sunscreen with SPF has a dual role to play. Since face mask cannot keep the harmful rays of the sun from you, a protective layer on the skin is imperative. Also, now that you must put least or no makeup at all on your face, a layer of sunscreen will also act as a lubricant to avoid much friction under the face mask.
Spray Rose Water Regularly
This is the best time to make rose water your best friend. We would recommend you to carry it everywhere with you along with the sanitiser. Why because, rose water acts as a great setting spray. Also, it helps to maintain the skin's pH balance, along with controlling excess oil. So, whenever you feel your skin is becoming oily or dull, just spray it on your face to feel fresh and lively. Here’s how you can make rose water mist.
Steps
- In a saucepan, add rose petals and 1 cup of water.
- Cover with a lid and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to the lowest temperature.
- Simmer until the colour of the rose petals has faded.
- Leave the lid on and let the solution cool completely.
- Filter and pour in a spray bottle. And it’s ready to use.
Clean Your Cloth Face Mask Regularly
If you use a homemade cloth face mask it is imperative to clean it every day. This will increase the chance of you to stay safe and also protect your skin from any kind of germs that have landed on your mask. A cloth mask can be machine or hand-washed. However, if you use store-bought surgical or any other mask, it is recommended to dispose them of as it cannot be safely cleaned at home.
