Chaitra Navratri is one of the most auspicious times of the year for the Hindu community. This festival is nine days long during which Goddess Durga and her nine avatars are worshipped. Devotees install Kalash at homes and temples, fast during the Navratri, and follow a Sattvic diet under which one does not consume onions and garlic, apart from meats.

This year, Chaitra Navratri begins on April 9 and will conclude on Ram Navami, or Chaitra Navami, which is on April 17, 2024. During this period, some foods and vegetables are restricted for consumption according to mythological texts. Our astrology expert Pandit Arvind Tripathi has shared why one should avoid onions and garlic during Chaitra Navratri.

Garlic And Onion Attract Darkness

Our mythology suggests that consuming garlic and onion during Navratri (Navratri Puja Samagri List) is auspicious as they are a part of the Tamasic feast which gives rise to ignorance and lust in a person. These emotions can make a person lose control over their mind and forget their purpose leading to deceit and fraud entering their lives.

Garlic And Onion Are Inauspicious

If we look at the scientific reason why onion and garlic should not be eaten during Navratri, our mythology suggests that since these vegetables are grown underground, some creatures have to die in the process. Sanatan Dharma is against bloodshed and anything that has the blood of another creature is considered inauspicious.

Here’s Why Garlic And Onion Are Not Added To Bhog

The Hindu mythology states that the tale of onion and garlic revolves around an asura (demon) called Swarbhanu. After the samudra-manthan, he sat with the Gods and drank the nectar. When Lord Vishnu found out about this in the form of Mohini, he chopped off Swarbhanu's head with the Sudarshan Chakra.

Ever since the incident, Swarbhanu's head and torso are known as Rahu and Ketu, respectively. After beheading him when these two parts of his body fell on the ground along with a splatter of his blood, garlic and onion are believed to have grown from that. This is why these vegetables are considered impure and inauspicious and hence are not offered to the deities.
