Karwa Chauth holds a lot of significance in the Hindu culture. Karwa Chauth fast is observed every year on the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, married women keep a fast for the long life of their husbands and worship Chautha Mata. During this fast, women can't eat or drink anything including water.
Earthen pots hold a special significance on this festival as women fill it with water and offer it to the moon before breaking the fast.
Along with this, women get ready in their best attire in the evening and put on all the ornaments along with applying henna. It is believed that if the colour of the henna applied on your hands is dark, that means your husband loves you immensely.
According to the customs, after the moon comes out on Karwa Chauth, it is offered Arghya. After that, the fast is broken by drinking water from your husband's hands. Read on to know more about the festival this year.
The day starts with sargi. It is a ritual where women have to wake up before the sun rises, take a bath and get ready in their best attire. Sargi is prepared by the mother-in-law and the plate usually includes feni and dry fruits. After you have the sargi, you have to worship the god and take a vow of not eating or drinking anything for your husband.

In the evening, prepare a plate (thali) with incense, diya, sandalwood paste, sindoor, roli and dry fruits. Then, cover it with a cloth. Then, this thali is used for vartana (thali rotation). This is performed by all the women keeping fast either at the temple or at anyone's home.

Before the ritual of thali vartana starts, women read the katha and worship Goddess Gauri. This is usually done around 5:00 pm, three to four hours before the moon rises.
After the puja, wait for the moon to arise. After you see the moon, offer water to the moon and worship it. Then, take the blessings of your in-laws. Puja on the day of Karwa Chauth is incomplete without the daughter-in-law taking the blessings from her mother-in-law. It is believed that offering gifts and sweets to the mother-in-law on this day brings good luck.
