The history of India has registered many heinous crimes and brutal criminals. Many of these incidents have been extensively covered and later inspired by docuseries that are available on many OTT platforms.

From marches across the country to social media campaigns, the incidents became huge. The hue and cry was a medium for the public to show that they were not happy with the law and order situation in the country.

These were documented in films, docuseries, and web series for people and the next generation to get a faint idea of how they left the nation shocked. Here are 11 real-life horrors that you can watch on OTT.

26/11 Mumbai Attack

No matter who you ask, every Indian can tell you gory details about the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai. 10 men identifying with the militant Islamist group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, carried out 12 bombing and shooting attacks in the city that never sleeps. the Oberoi Trident, the Metro Cinema, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Taj Palace, the Leopold Cafe, the Nariman House, and the lane behind St. Xavier’s College and the Times Of India office.

Political leaders were criticised and marches across the country happened. The incident was documented and has been converted into films and series. Nirbhaya Case

Nirbhaya Case was the name given to the horrific gang rape of a woman in Delhi in 2012. On the night of December 16, she was travelling in a private bus with her friend. The criminals tortured, gang-raped, and beat her. She succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

Public protests against the state and central government made us realise how unsafe women are in the country. ‘Delhi Crime’ (2019) season 1 on Netflix, ‘India’s Daughter’ (2012) on Amazon Prime, and ‘Indian Never Again Nirbhaya’ (2018) on MX Player are based on the incident.

The Burari Deaths

When news of 11 members of a family dying by suicide headlined newspapers and channels in 2018, the country was shocked. 10 members were found hanging and an old woman was strangled. ‘House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths’ (2021) on Netflix is based on this incident.

Nithari Killings

After the Allahabad High Court acquitted both accused in the Nithari Killings case, it has been everywhere on the internet. The incident happened in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and two men were accused of killing an adult woman and more than 15 minors.

Based on this case, you can watch ‘The Karma Killings’ (2017) on Netflix, and ‘Slumdog Cannibal’ (2012), a BBC documentary. ‘Murder 2’ (2011) by Mohit Suri is believed to be inspired by this horrific incident.

Case Of Arushi Talwar

Arushi Talwar’s case needs no description. In 2008, a 13-year-old girl was murdered, and the prime suspects were her parents. The case remains unsolved to date. The media covered it extensively, and the character of the deceased was also assassinated.

‘Nibunan’ (2017) Kannada film is based on this incident. Disney + Hotstar has a docuseries titled ‘The Talwars: Behind Closed Doors’. The case also inspired a podcast and two more documentary series.

Uphaar Fire Tragedy (Uphaar Cinema Fire)

One of the worst fire incidents registered in the history of India is the Uphaar Cinema Fire. In 1997, 59 people were reported to have died in the tragedy due to asphyxiation, and 103 were severely injured. The family members of the deceased filed a case. In 2015, the Supreme Court ordered two years of jail for Ansal's brother, owners of the complex, if they failed to pay ₹30 crores to the family of each victim.

Trial By Fire’ (2023) is a series on Netflix based on this horrific incident. It stars Abhay Deol, Abhishek Sharma, Rajshri Deshpande, Ratna Pathak Shah, and other actors.

Veerappan's Reign

Koose Munisamy Veerappan was a bandit. He used to kidnap renowned politicians for ransom. He was also charged with poaching of elephants and smuggling of sandalwood. He had killed more than 180 people, including forest officials and policemen.

‘The Hunt For Veerappan’ is a docuseries based on his life. Released in 2023, it is available on Netflix. Other films based on the life of the bandit include, ‘Attahasa’ (2012), ‘Veerappan’ (1991), ‘Killing Veerappan’ (2016), and ‘Sandhanakaadu’ (2007). There are many books based on his life and have been published in English, Kannada, and Tamil.

Case Of Bharat Kalicharan Yadav And Murder In A Courtroom

Bharat Kalicharan Yadav Murder aka Akku Yadav was a gangster, kidnapper, home invader, serial killer, rapist, robber, and extortionist. There wasn’t a crime that he did not commit. His earliest registered crime was gang rape in 1991. He had raped 40 women and girls.

A woman resisted Akku and his gang. Mob supported her, and they burned his house. It is believed that he went to seek protection from the police. In 2004, hundreds of women stabbed him, threw chilli powder on his face, and cut off his penis. According to the initial reports of BBC, 14 women and many kids forcefully entered the courtroom in which his case was being heard and stabbed him to death.

Case Of Decapitated Victims Outside Tihar Jail

Chandrakant Jha was a serial killer who used to befriend people, murder them, and dismember their bodies. He used to leave the bodies of victims outside police stations and jails with a mocking note. Three bodies were discovered outside the Tihar Jail too. Later, he was caught and sentenced to death.

Reading the news in connection with Jha’s crimes used to scare people. A docuseries based on his life is available on Netflix. It is called ‘Indian Predator: The Butcher Of Delhi.’

Raja Kolander’s Case

In 2000, a man named Raja Kolander was a name that people were afraid of. He is believed to have murdered more than 15 people in eastern Uttar Pradesh areas. He is also believed to have practised cannibalism.

Dhirendra Singh was a journalist in Allahabad. He went missing in 2000, and his mutilated body was found in Madhya Pradesh. A short series on Netflix documents his brutal crimes and life. It is titled ‘Indian Predator: The Diary of a Serial Killer’.

Case Of Umesh Reddy, Bengaluru

In 1999, Umesh Reddy was a well-known and most feared name in Karnataka. He was a police officer who committed heinous crimes. He was reported to have raped and murdered 18 women.

In 2009, the Karnataka High Court passed a death sentence against him, and in 2011, the Supreme Court of India upheld it. ‘Indian Predator: Beast of Bengaluru’ is a docuseries on Netflix about the life of a criminal.
