Numerous anime series often lack proper sequels or closures, concluding with a suggestion to read the manga. Nevertheless, there are instances when the cosmos align, and the anime gods bestow upon the world a continuation or resolution. Occasionally, these gifts manifest in the form of movies, bringing joy to fans. Despite the challenge of accessing these films outside of Japan, the announcement of a movie as a follow-up to an anime series is always a cause for celebration. Below we mention some of these anime sequels in the form of movies that are a must-watch.
‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’
The anime film ‘Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train,’ which became the highest-grossing anime movie, made a significant cultural impact upon its release in 2020. Taking place mainly on a train, it follows the Demon Slayer Corps as they confront an Upper Rank member of the Twelve Kizuki. Mugen Train boasts stunning animation, especially in its intense fight sequences. In line with the anime series, the film incorporates humour, largely thanks to characters Zenitsu and Kyōjurō Rengoku, with the latter standing out as a scene-stealer.
‘K-On! The Movie’
'K-On!' is a cornerstone in the slice-of-life genre, and its apparent simplicity in today's anime (horror anime) scene is a result of numerous later series drawing influence from it. The movie follows the founding members of the Light Music Club as they approach graduation, taking a trip to London. Brimming with exceptional music and heartfelt emotional scenes, ‘K-On!’ The Movie allows fans to say their goodbyes to Yui and her companions.

‘Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa’
'Fullmetal Alchemist' underwent two anime adaptations. The initial one, titled simply 'Fullmetal Alchemist,' aired from 2003 to 2004. As this first anime adaptation was in production while the original manga was still ongoing, the storyline surpassed the manga, resulting in significant deviations from the source material. Conqueror of Shamballa was created to address the unresolved plot elements lingering after the anime. These involved Edward being isolated from the rest of the cast by being transported to 1920s Germany.
'The Last: Naruto the Movie'
Between 2004 and 2015, several Naruto (anime inspired by Japanese mythology) movies were released. However, only two of them, namely The Last and Boruto, are regarded as fully canon. This distinction is primarily due to their role in introducing the next generation of characters, who take the lead in Boruto, and in bridging the narrative gap between the conclusion of Naruto and the commencement of Boruto. While The Last possesses a robust standalone storyline with memorable action scenes, its primary strength lies in serving as the conclusive chapter of Naruto. The movie kicks off with a stylised recap of the series up to that point, and by the conclusion, the familiar and beloved characters from the series finally attain their long-awaited happy endings.
‘Digimon Adventure 02’
The expanding Digimon universe now encompasses nine distinct series, many of which unfold in unique timelines. The original Digimon Adventure is succeeded by Digimon Adventure 02, a genuine sequel that introduces a fresh set of Digidestined characters. While Digimon Adventure 02 maintains the playful energy of its predecessor, it ventures into darker territories with its villains and places a greater emphasis on serialisation.
