Trekking is becoming popular by the day as we have stressful days in the city and trekking sure does help us in venting it all out. If you are heading out for one then do remember that there are certain rules and regulations to be followed in the outdoors. Milind Bhide, Director, and Co-Founder of Countryside Adventure Holidays, says that in a remote area, your safety and security is as much a priority as enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Hence it is always important to follow some basic safety tips in the outdoors. Have fun, but also stay safe! These tips will help you along the way.
Do Your Homework
It always helps to have a deeper understanding of your trekking route, the destination, and how the itinerary progresses. Read up! It’s always helpful, and necessary to know what exactly you’re getting into, and the physical challenges if any. Make sure all your important documents like tickets, passport, visa, and insurance are in place. Keep important contact numbers handy as well.
Pack Smart
Carry only the very essentials. Use items of clothing that are multipurpose and always have your important supplies at hand, to minimise your luggage and allow for easier transportation. Trekking with a heavy bag is uncomfortable, especially in the mountains where you have to walk for long hours. Always pack smart - you’ll thank us later!
Travel In Groups Wherever Possible

In an unknown place, it is very unsafe to wander off on your own. Hence stick together, and always keep your trek mates informed if you are setting off anywhere.
Keep Folks Informed
We cannot stress on this enough - always, always keep your family and friends informed of your whereabouts and stay in touch whenever you get phone connectivity. Share your itinerary with them and plan in advance with some important numbers. You never know what might go wrong in the outdoors even after being careful.
Keep Menstrual Hygiene Supplies Handy

In rural and remote areas of the Himalayas, the subject of menstruation is still taboo. People hesitate to discuss it out in the open. In the big cities, menstrual hygiene products are readily available but these facilities are hardly there on trekking trails in remote areas. Even items like toilet paper are hard to come by. Hence it is best to stock up on these and save yourself a lot of hassle later on.
Pick A Familiar Trail
You don’t want to have an emergency and be stranded somewhere with not a soul in sight. Or worse still, with no inkling of where you are. We’ve been there - it is the most terrifying thing in the world, being lost in the outdoors.

Dress Appropriately
It is always a wise idea to dress appropriately and conservatively while trekking in remote areas in the mountains. Many monasteries and temples along the route have a dress code for entry, and not adhering to it can be considered disrespectful.
Respect Local Customs
Do not photograph locals without their prior permission. Also, follow the dress code and stick to the rules and regulations to avoid getting into any trouble. Besides, it makes you look culturally insensitive.
