YouTube has just launched a new, more affordable subscription plan called Premium Lite. For just $7.99 a month (around ₹696), this plan lets you watch most YouTube videos without ads. It’s currently available in the US as part of a pilot programme, but YouTube has plans to expand it to other countries like Australia, Germany, and Thailand soon.
YouTube Premium Lite Features
While Premium Lite is cheaper than YouTube Premium, it comes with some limitations. You’ll get an ad-free experience for most videos, but ads might still pop up in certain places. For example, music videos, YouTube Shorts, and even search and browsing results may still show ads. So, it’s not a completely ad-free experience across the board.
Another thing to note is that Premium Lite doesn’t include access to YouTube Music, so you’ll still hear ads when streaming music or watching music videos. It also doesn’t offer features like background play or the ability to download music for offline listening.
Despite these limitations, Premium Lite is a great option for anyone who wants to enjoy their favourite videos without constant ad interruptions but doesn’t need all the extra features of YouTube Premium.
The launch of Premium Lite is part of YouTube’s celebration of its 20th anniversary and its effort to offer more choices to users. With over 125 million subscribers worldwide (including those on trial plans), YouTube is looking to cater to a wider range of needs. Premium Lite is perfect for viewers who don’t need the extra perks of YouTube Premium, like YouTube Music or downloading the videos offline.

Currently, YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month in the US (around ₹1218), which can be steep for some people. Premium Lite offers a more affordable way to enjoy ad-free videos, making it a great option for budget-conscious viewers.

Premium Lite was first tested in countries like Thailand, Germany, and Australia before being introduced in the United States. YouTube plans to expand it to more regions soon, aiming to attract viewers who want an ad-free experience without needing all the additional features.
As more people shift from watching YouTube on mobile devices and desktops to TVs (now the most popular platforms in the US), YouTube sees an opportunity to make its service more appealing to those who enjoy watching on bigger screens. Premium Lite’s affordability is especially attractive to younger viewers who consume a lot of online video content and want to avoid ads.
