Winter is near, and it is time to take out our woollen collection and flaunt it. From sweaters to overcoats, winters in the North of India require you to hide underneath layers to protect yourself from the chilly waves that can leave you shivering.
The only downside is storage, maintenance and cleaning of woollens that seem to take entire days. Here is a guide to keeping your winter clothes fresh and stunning in the coming months.
After you take out woollens from the depths of your cupboard and under-bed storage, hang them out in the sun. It will kill any bacteria, remove the pungent smell of naphthalene balls and make them appear fluffy again.
You must not hang woollens in the cupboard, instead, fold them and stack them on a shelf. Hanging winter clothes can stretch them out and damage the looks and knits. You can avoid this inevitable damage by working a little hard and folding your sweaters, inners, jackets (how to style jackets) and other clothes after washing or wearing them.
Even in winter, you must add moth balls in the corners of your cupboard or shelves to ensure that insects do not attack your clothes. To ensure that the balls do not add a strong smell to sweaters and pants, you can add them to a muslin cloth and place them around the corners.
Woollens need not be washed after every wear. Sweaters, skirts, tops and pants can be washed after every fourth or fifth wear. On the other hand, coats and jackets can be washed a maximum of twice a season only.
When you opt for machine washing, you must always select cold, normal or lukewarm water settings. If you wash your woollens in hot water, they are more likely to fade or develop lint. One must also use mild detergent for woollens to keep the threads intact and increase longevity. Most of the clothes come with washing instructions that one must follow.
You must not hang woollens on a clothesline to dry in the air. They could be heavy, and additional water weight can damage their shape by stretching them. You can place them on a towel or bedsheet while drying them under the sun.
Even in winter, you must safeguard your woollens against moisture. For this, you can add silica gel to your wardrobe or contains where you stack them up. If you store even slightly wet woollens, they can become the breeding ground for germs and bacteria.

You must not iron woollen clothes. There is hardly any type that looks messy or develops creases after the wash. If you air-dry them, that is enough. Ironing can also lead to lint formation. However, if you have to iron sometimes, spread a cotton cloth over your woollen cloth and iron it inside out.
