In today’s fast-paced work environment, ensuring workplace safety is more critical than ever, especially with the increasing incidence of rape and sexual harassment. “Since 2018, India has recorded more than 400 cases of workplace sexual harassment annually, with an average of 445 cases each year. The NCRB data is available only up to 2022, showing an average of 445 workplace sexual harassment cases reported annually during this period. In 2022 alone, there were 419 cases, averaging roughly 35 per month. This indicates that, on average, at least one case of workplace sexual harassment is filed every day,” according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)

The recent rape and murder incident of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, along with other similar incidents, is causing many women in the city to change their behaviour. “Many women in the city, residing in hostels and PGs, especially around the IT corridor, Ameerpet and Begumpet, battling feelings of heightened insecurity, are looking for private accommodation, believing that they might offer better safety,” according to the Deccan Chronicle report.

Women entrepreneurs, who lead small to medium-sized to big businesses, bring a unique outlook to creating and maintaining a safe office environment for their female employees. They have often come across numerous challenges like toxic bosses, societal issues, and an unhealthy work environment to build their businesses. It allows women to explore, create, and lead with confidence. For women entrepreneurs, safety isn’t just about physical protection; it’s about creating a supportive environment,” she added.

2. Prioritise Strong Safety Protocols And Workshops

Anshita Mehrotra, Founder - Fix My Curls, strongly believes that safety extends beyond physical security. She says, “In today’s world, workplace safety has become more critical than ever, especially for women. I’ve made it a point to establish strong safety protocols and workshops that talk extensively about consent and workplace behaviour to create a work environment where everyone feels respected and heard.”

She further recommends, “To practise such vigilance, establishing a zero-tolerance policy against harassment, and having a clear reporting mechanism enabled by HR departments are essential steps. These measures might seem basic, but in light of the increasing incidents of violence against women, they’ve proven to be vital in creating a safe work environment.”
