On every Ashtami Tithi of Kartik month, women observe the fast of Ahoi Ashtami to ask Goddess Ahoi for the good health and longevity of their children. According to the scriptures, observing a dry fast for the whole day helps you receive the blessings of Maa Ahoi and welcome prosperity into the house and this also helps the health of the children remain good.
This year, the Ahoi Ashtami will be celebrated on November 5. To get all the benefits of the fast and puja, you have to follow certain rules as per the beliefs.

How Is Ahoi Mata Worshipped?
The women observe the Nirjala fast for the whole day on Ahoi Ashtami and worship Ahoi Mata with full rituals in the evening. During the puja, mothers wish for the long life and well-being of their children.
According to the beliefs, you should offer Arghya under the shade of stars. The devotees bring a picture of Ahoi Mata in the house and worship her by placing a calendar. During the worship of Ahoi Mata, Ahoi is made of silver, which is called Syau. The Syau locket is then inserted in the Kalava and worn around the neck as a garland by the mothers. Some prefer to wear it till Diwali.

Why Is Syau Mala Worn On Ahoi Ashtami?
Astrology believes that Syau Mala is worn to show devotion to Maa Ahoi and wish for a long life, good health of the child and blessings of the goddess. One silver pearl is supposed to be added to this rosary every year and this pearl represents the age of the children and it is believed to grant them the blessing of longevity.
You should also worship the Syau locket by applying Roli Tilak on it. It is tied together with a Kalawa or Mauli and is believed to be a symbolistic protection thread, hence wearing it is supposed to protect the child from any problem and provide solution in case of any.
After you take it off on Diwali, you have to keep it in a safe place like the safe of your home.
