There is an old custom in India to feed the poor and needy to their heart's content. The followers of the Hindu religion call it Bhandare or Pangat, and in Sikhism, it is known as Langar.

Who Started Tradition Of 'Kada Prasad' In Gurudwara?
According to the scriptures, the first Guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev was the first one to start the tradition of 'Kada Prasad'.
The legend says that Guru Nanak Dev’s father gave him ₹20 to start a business. But instead, he bought food items with that and distributed them among the needy. He told his father that there is no greater business than feeding the poor and getting their precious blessings.

The pudding you receive in Gurudwara is known as 'Kada Prasad'. All the dishes prepared for Langar are offered in front of Guru Granth Saheb first and then, the Halwa is offered using a Kirpan.
The delicacies and Halwa are then distributed among the devotees. The belief is that if you eat the Guru Prasad i.e. Kada Prasad you receive from Gurudwara, you are blessed with happiness and auspiciousness.
