This event has captured the attention of chess enthusiasts worldwide and marks a significant moment in the history of competitive chess.
18-year-old Indian Grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju has made history by becoming the youngest player ever to challenge for the prestigious FIDE World Chess Championship. He earned this remarkable achievement by triumphing in the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament.
Who Is Gukesh Dommaraju?
Gukesh Dommaraju is set to face Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship in Singapore, aiming to make history. Born and raised in Chennai, Gukesh is one of India’s leading chess players of his generation. This marks a historic moment in chess, as it's the first time in 138 years of World Championship matches that two players from Asia will compete for the game's most prestigious title.

1. Gukesh Dommaraju began learning chess at the Velammal School in Chennai when he was just seven years old. However, he stopped attending school after completing Standard 4. It was in Standard 1 that Gukesh's potential was first spotted by his initial chess coach, Bhaskar V, during the extracurricular activities period.
2. Bhaskar introduced Gukesh Dommaraju to his second coach, Vijayanand, who ran a chess academy where Bhaskar also taught. At the Vijayanand Chess Academy, his days began early, around 9:30 am. During those early years, he was given 70 chess puzzles to solve each day, focusing on improving his tactical and game awareness. He would attend lessons on chess theory and middle-game strategy, with classes lasting until 7:30 pm.
3. At the age of 11, Gukesh Dommaraju began working with Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, who came up with a bold idea. Vishnu suggested that Gukesh avoid using chess engines - a tool most players rely on today.

4. Gukesh Dommaraju is the third-youngest grandmaster in chess history and holds the record as the youngest-ever winner of the Candidates Tournament. He is also the youngest player to compete for the World Chess Championship title. In addition, Gukesh has won multiple gold medals at both the World Youth Chess Championship and the Asian Youth Chess Championship.
5. The World Chess Championship final is set to take place in Singapore from November 25 to December 13, 2024. This highly anticipated match will bring together the reigning champion Ding Liren from China and India’s rising chess star, Gukesh Dommaraju.
