Veer Savarkar Jayanti 2025: History

According to India’s Ministry of Culture, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was not only a freedom fighter but also a poet, writer, and political thinker. While pursuing his studies at Fergusson College in Pune, he founded the secret organisation “Abhinav Bharat” in 1904, promoting armed resistance against British colonial rule. During his time in London, he established the ‘Free India Society’ and authored ‘The First War of Independence,’ a historical account of the 1857 uprising.

In 1910, Savarkar was arrested for his revolutionary actions. He made a bold attempt to escape while in Marseilles but was recaptured and sentenced to 50 years of imprisonment at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands. However, this harsh punishment never weakened his determination or his passion for India’s freedom, as noted by the Ministry.

After his release in 1937, he became actively involved with the Hindu Mahasabha and served as its president for nearly seven years. During this period, he also advocated for the eradication of untouchability within Hindu society. In 1951, Savarkar officially disbanded ‘Abhinav Bharat’ and dedicated his efforts entirely to the ideological mission of the Hindu Mahasabha.
