Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, every year all around the world. Couples honour their love and commitment to each other on this day by going on romantic dates and giving each other gifts and surprises. As lovebirds delve into the preparations for the day of love and romance, let us delve into the history and significance of the tradition of Valentine’s Day.
History Of Valentine’s Day
While Valentine’s Day (Valentine's Day: Unique Date Ideas) is all about love and romance, its history doesn’t quite say ‘love.’ Since around the end of the 5th century, February 14 has been celebrated as Valentine’s Day after Pope Gelasius declared so. However, its origin was more to religious benefit than romantic. Earlier, a mid-winter celebration was observed to celebrate the marriage of the god Zeus and the goddess Hera in Ancient Greece.
According to the ancient Roman calendar called Lupercalia, a mid-February holiday was observed to celebrate fertility, as believed by some historians. This holiday later turned into Valentine’s Day as we know it today.

Significance Of Valentine’s Day
According to recent traditions, Valentine’s Day (Valentine's Day Activities) is often associated with Cupid, the angel of love. Cupid is believed to be the son of Venus, the Goddess of love and beauty, as per Roman mythology. The bow and arrow of Cupid are believed to be a symbol of the heart being pierced and the spell of love being cast on it. Hence, began the tradition of celebrating it as the day of love.
