Recently, a shocking and frightening incident took place in Greater Noida where a usual bathroom visit turned into a nightmare for a 20-year-old Ashu. Reportedly, the man suffered burns on his face and body as the home’s toilet exploded. He was immediately rushed to the hospital by his father, Sunil Pradhan, where the doctor confirmed that he suffered 35% burns.
Narrating the horrifying incident to TOI, Ashu’s father said, “The blast left Ashu with severe burn injuries to his face and body. He was rushed to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida,
where doctors confirmed he had suffered 35% burns.” He also clarified that Ashu was not using any mobile phone or electronic gadget at the time, adding to some common theories like gadget explosions.
While this may sound bizarre, it's frightening and could happen anywhere, especially in homes with ageing or poorly maintained plumbing systems.

Reportedly, the early assessments revealed that neither the explosion occurred because of any electrical issue nor was it triggered due to any problem with the home's air conditioning or other appliances. The real reason behind the explosion was the least expected and potentially dangerous: the methane gas buildup.
The family, including neighbours, have suspected that methane may have accumulated inside the toilet bowl due to a clogged drain, and a spark may have ignited the gas, leading to an explosion. However, the exact cause is unclear. “Pipes here are not just old, but they haven’t been cleaned in years. Choked pipes can lead to the accumulation of gas, which can explode under pressure,” shared resident Harinder Bhati. Experts, including a chemistry professor, also explained that methane can collect in sewer lines and confined bathrooms, especially where drains are blocked and ventilation is poor.
