Akshaya Tritiya, also known as ‘Akha Teej’, is an auspicious day for the Hindus and the Jains. It is celebrated on the third lunar day of the bright moon of Vaishakha/ Baisakh month and this year it is falling on 7th May. On this day the sun and moon, both are exalted, they are at their peak of brightness on this day. The Sun is the signification of soul and Moon represents the mind.
The word Akshay means ‘eternal’ which means never demolish, it is believed that if you do charity on this day you will be blessed. The day is considered auspicious for starting new ventures, as anything initiated on this day will grow and bring prosperity. In the Bhagavad Gita, it is recommended that one should do charity on this day without expecting any returns.

Akshaya Tritiya is significant for a number of reasons. It is the day when Sat yuga is believed to have started. The sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Parasurama, was born on this day. Ved Vyas and Lord Ganesha started scripting Mahabharata on this holy day. It is believed that if you donate something you can attain long life, wealth and prosperity.
