Monday is considered to be the most important day for Lord Shiva. It is considered auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on Monday. People know that we should worship Lord Shiva with Bel plant, bhang, datura, milk, sandal and ash. There are proper rules to worship Lord Shiva and if the rules are not followed, then you will not get the fruits of the worship.

Tulsi leaves are also known as Laxmi, therefore you should not offer these to Lord Shiva at any cost. Goddess Laxmi is the wife of Lord Shiva, therefore no other god can be offered the same. It is considered a sin to offer Vishnu Priya Tulsi to Shiva.
You should not use shankh while worshipping Lord Shiva. A lot of people perform Jalabhishek with a shankh but it is forbidden as Shiva killed a demon named Shankhachurna. Therefore, shankh is not used in Shiva worship and the name of that demon's wife was also Tulsi.
Turmeric should not be used while worshipping Lord Shiva. It is believed that turmeric is used for auspicious works while Shiva resides in the crematorium. Therefore, using turmeric is prohibited while worshipping Lord Shiva.
The use of any red coloured material should not be used while worshipping Lord Shiva but mainly red flowers such as hibiscus flowers should not be used. This will anger Lord Shiva instead of making him happy.
We offer Lord Shiva water but we should remember that we should not offer coconut water to Lord Shiva. Offering coconut water to the deity can give the opposite result of devotion.

People believe that it is considered auspicious to offer white flowers in the worship of Lord Shiva but do not forget to use ketki flowers while worshipping Lord Shiva. By doing this, the fruit of devotion to Lord Shiva is not obtained because according to a legend, the flower of Ketaki was considered cursed for worshipping Lord Shiva.
It is believed that til or sesame originated from the filth of Lord Shiva, so sesame seeds can be offered to Lord Vishnu but can’t be offered to Lord Shiva. If you offer this to Lord Shiva, then you will not get the fruits of the worship.

It is generally considered auspicious to offer red vermillion or kumkum during the worship of the Lord. However, when it comes to worshipping Lord Shiva, sandalwood is used instead of vermillion or kumkum. It is believed that Lord Shiva is a recluse and offering him red vermillion is equal to taunting and insulting him.
